When teaching in a small group setting, the instructor serves as a facilitator, providing students the opportunity to develop communication, leadership, teamwork and problem solving skills that are necessary for clinical practice. In this overview of small group facilitation, explore the characteristics of effective small group learning, the stages of group formation, common group problems, and strategies facilitators can use to promote group discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this online activity, learners will be able to:

1) Describe characteristics of effective small group learning.
2) Identify the stages of small group formation.
3) Recognize and address common group problems.
